چکیده

BACKGROUND AND AIMS Etiolation symptoms and the greening process are usually studied on dark-germinated seedlings and this raises the question--can these results be generalized for plants growing under field conditions? This work examines various aspects of the plastid differentiation under the covering of the achene wall, which often remains attached to the cotyledons of sunflower (Helianthus annuus) seedlings grown under light. METHODS Cotyledons of 7- to 10-d-old sunflower seedlings grown in the dark and on light were examined. The partially covered cotyledons were sectioned into light-exposed, covered and transition zones. Pigment contents, 77 K fluorescence spectroscopy, electron microscopy and fluorescence imaging, along with fluorescence kinetic methods, were used. KEY RESULTS The light-exposed zone of the partially covered cotyledons was similar to cotyledons developed without achene covering. However, some of the plastids had prolamellar bodies among the granal thylakoid membranes; despite this no protochlorophyllide was detected. The fully covered, yellowish sections contained protochlorophyllide forms emitting at 633 and 655 nm and well-developed prolamellar bodies, similar to those of etiolated cotyledons. In addition, reduced amounts of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and stacked thylakoid membrane pairs were found in this region. The transitional sections showed a mixture of the characteristics of the covered and exposed sections. Various, but significantly different values of the photosynthetic activity parameters were found in each sector of the partially covered cotyledons. CONCLUSIONS The partial covering of the achene wall shades the cotyledon tissues effectively, enough to provoke the appearance of etiolation phenomena, i.e. the permanent presence of flash-photoactive protochlorophyllide complexes and prolamellar bodies (with or without protochlorophyllide), which proves that these phenomena may appear under natural illumination conditions.

Determination of drought tolerance related traits in Helianthus argophyllus, Helianthus annuus, and their hybrids

Drought is a major constraint for sunflower (Helianthus annuus) production worldwide. Drought tolerance traits have been identified in the related wild species Helianthus argophyllus. This study was initiated to develop sunflower drought-tolerant genotypes by crossing cultivated sunflower with this species and analyze drought tolerance traits in the H. annuus and H. argophyllus populations, H. ...

Growth and development of sunflower fruits under shade during pre and early post-anthesis period

The effect of pre and post-anthesis shading (20% of incident radiation) on pericarp development, cotyledon cell number and seed growth dynamic of fruits from three positions in the capitulum (peripheral, mid and central) of two sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) genotypes were studied at two locations. Both shading treatments reduced pericarp weight, fruit volume and total yield per plant. Plants...

Profitability Assessment of Abscisic Acid Application on Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) Hybrid under Drought and Well Watered Conditions

Profitability assessment has prime importance for every crop husbandry practice and cultural operation. For this purpose, two field experiment was carried out to investigate the response of spring planted sunflower hybrids to different irrigation levels/schedules and foliar application of abscisic acid. Two studies were done at the Agronomic Research Farm, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad,...

Current status and future perspectives on sunflower insect pests

 While occasional insect pests of cultivated sunflowers may be managed by conventional or reducedrisk insecticides, the cumulative costs and risks of relying on insecticides to suppress perennial or severe pests (common in North America) call for exploration of broader pest management strategies.  Recent research with the sunflower moth (Homoeosoma electellum [Pyralidae]) and banded sunflower...

Synthesis of Isocitrate Lyase in Sunflower Cotyledons during the Transition in Cotyledonary Microbody Function.

Density-labeling with 10 millimolar K(15)NO(3)/70% (2)H(2)O has been used to investigate isocitrate lyase synthesis during greening of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cotyledons when the glyoxysomal enzyme activities sharply decline and the transition in cotyledonary microbody function occurs. A density shift of 0.0054 (kilograms per liter) was obtained for the profile of isocitrate lyase acti...
